Position Summary:

Perform mental and physical acts required for the successful execution of new development projects meeting deadlines and maintaining budget.  Accountable for the optimization and continuous improvement of existing production jobs to increase quality, reduce scrap, and increase efficiency and output.

 

Assists management and co-workers to maximize productivity, safety, quality, team building, trouble-shooting and maintenance through his/her expertise in a given job function.  Support all shifts as needed.

 

Positional scope includes tool development, process development, and process specifications for the design and development of existing and new project samples.

 

Responsible for research and development work, solution of problems, design of new processes, mechanisms or adaptations for wide variety of equipment.  Make alterations or changes to facilitate production.  Discuss/consult with sales or customer service on product requirements, specifications where design or manufacturing problems are involved.

Position Summary:

Perform mental and physical acts required for the successful execution of new development projects meeting deadlines and maintaining budget.  Accountable for the optimization and continuous improvement of existing production jobs to increase quality, reduce scrap, and increase efficiency and output.

 

Assists management and co-workers to maximize productivity, safety, quality, team building, trouble-shooting and maintenance through his/her expertise in a given job function.  Support all shifts as needed.

 

Positional scope includes tool development, process development, and process specifications for the design and development of existing and new project samples.

 

Responsible for research and development work, solution of problems, design of new processes, mechanisms or adaptations for wide variety of equipment.  Make alterations or changes to facilitate production.  Discuss/consult with sales or customer service on product requirements, specifications where design or manufacturing problems are involved.

 

May supervise/direct work of others as required.

 

Hour of work:    Regular hours will be 7: 30 am - 4: 00pm Tuesday through Friday.  Monday (or other designated start up day/time) normally 6: 00 am – 3: 00pm.  (less ½ hour unpaid daily lunch).  Some call-ins may be required.  Overtime will be for specific reasons and approved in advance by Senior Management.  Hours of work may be revised  to support production efficiencies and business requirements.  Flexibility with hour of work is required.  The Company reserves the right to revise regular hours of work in the future.

 

Principal Duties:

 
  1. Provide direction and support for initial development prior to set-up and run-off of production samples.
  2. Manage the process for set-up preparation and tear down inspection and storage.
  3. Responsible for thorough and efficient prep work for upcoming production jobs.
  4. Oversee mold preparation and optimize the process for production efficiencies, safety and quality initiatives.
  5. Responsible for the development, accuracy, storage and completion of production run sheets.  Maintains these documents in conformance with CBAs, policies, and ISO 9001 requirements.
  6. Ownership of assigned maintenance items as outlined on the attached list (See Attachment A) which may be appended, updated or modified from time to time.  Responsibilities are not limited to the specific equipment mentioned therein as management or prevailing conditions may require cross training or shared responsibilities.
  7. Perform other responsibilities as directed by management to meet or exceed project objectives.  Required to provide technical support through hands-on interaction with equipment, molding machines, etc.
  8. Provide any necessary training, transfer of skills, etc., whenever required (and/or in an effort to improve co-worker knowledge) and to whomever selected, in order to enhance the knowledge, skills, flexibility and continual improvement and growth of the company.
  9. Maintains documentation in conformance with CBA’ s, policies and ISO 9001 requirements.
  10. Communicate with vendors and vendor management as required.
 
Physical Requirements:

 
  1. Exhibit mechanical dexterity to perform routine set-ups, repairs, and adjustments to machinery.
  2. Routinely lift machine parts and items weighing up to50 lbs.
  3. Perform lifting functions up to 100 lbs. (machine parts, maneuvering heads, etc.)
  4. Exhibit close tolerance strength such as loosening and tightening bolts in narrow spaces.
  5. Good vision (correctable to 20/20) to set-up and monitor manufacturing process and machine troubleshooting.
  6. Ability to work while standing for long periods of time (4 hours straight).
  7. Ability to fulfill overtime requirements as needed to complete tasks on time and support customer demands.
  8. Ability to work in an environment with rapidly moving equipment and to tolerate noise and dust level associated with such equipment.
  9. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands and arms, climb, talk and hear.

Education and Experience:

A high school degree (or equivalent) is required, with an advanced technical degree a plus.  Five (5) years minimum experience with continuous extrusion shuttle blow molding machines (i.e. Fischer, Bekum, or equivalent) along with some machine repair background.

 

Complexity:

Requires extensive knowledge and comprehension of blow molding process, tools and equipment.  Strong technical skills required.

 

Confidentiality:

Has access to confidential data, such as product plans, costs, and designs, which, if disclosed, could significantly weaken the company' s  competitive position.  Must execute a Confidential Non-Disclosure Agreement, which remains in effect for 2 years after separation from the Company.

 

Contacts:

Constant contact with the company' s  functions, plus occasional outside contact with customers and vendors.

 

Supervision:

Must work independently to achieve project schedules and goals.  Expected to be flexible and support the project objectives and deadlines beyond the normal schedule, if/when necessary.  May be responsible for overseeing the activities of others.  Responsible for providing direction to staff for set-up and tear downs to ensure completion within deadlines.  Must demonstrate ongoing capability for delivering high quality craftsmanship with little supervision.

Position Summary:    Provide the interface between the launch teams and tool suppliers for all tool development activities. Develop, design and direct the building of high quality, competitively-costed prototype and production tools.  Deliver First Time Quality (FTQ) with on-time, on-budget launches.  Continue to meet quality standards and cost-effective tool maintenance targets after a tool transitions to

mass production.

 

Main Responsibilities
  1. Coordinate tool feasibility and tool design meetings using a multi-disciplinary, cross-functional approach to ensure the tool design is optimized for manufacturing efficiency within the company Smart Launch process.
  2. Review and approve designs of all new tools and Engineering Changes before steel is cut (tool design sign-off responsibilities.)
  3. Participate in R&D activities which involve customer interface on new programs under development.
  4. Participate in customer presentations and value-sell the company tooling capabilities and tooling designs. 
  5. Participate in the estimating/quoting process for new tools on an as-needed basis.
  6. Review tool performance (after 3 to 4 months in mass production) incorporating lessons learned into the Mold Standards and future tool builds.  Communicate “ lessons learned” to appropriate tool vendors and company team members.
  7. Develop/maintain a network of highly-competent, competitive tool builders, including global sources for tooling.
  8. Establish and monitor our mold maintenance schedules, ensuring PM plans are appropriate for the complexity of the specific tool.
  9. Participate in continuous improvement activities on current production tools.  Act as a troubleshooting problem-solver on tools with chronic problems.
  10. Continuously improve personal expertise in the latest trends and techniques in tool building and educate the company personnel as appropriate.  Provide mentorship to others in the engineering department with less experience as it relates to tooling engineering activities.
  11. Maintain a safe working environment (Safety Standard Manual) and set an example by following all appropriate safety rules.

Candidate Requirements:  
  1. A positive, “ hands-on”, “ can-do” approach and commitment to the job.
  2. Minimum of ten (10) years of hands-on experience in developing injection mold tooling concepts and designs to meet part requirements and molding process parameters. Similar duration of experience in the management of the construction of highly-robust, high-volume, tightly-tolerance, injection molding tools is required. 
  3. Direct experience in designing and building molds that will see high heat, with hot and cold runner systems, and engineering grade resins is required.
  4. Demonstrated success in directing the final “ tuning” of tools to meet customer specifications in mass production is required.  
  5. Must be able to develop a full bill-of- material for the tool construction and to define the complete process flow for the tool construction build.
  6. Demonstrated expertise in the use of Solidworks and the ability to perform detailed mold flow analysis and modeling, and the capability to translate such modeling into presentation materials and working with customers to achieve DFM goals is strongly preferred.
  7. Minimum education level required – Associate’ s degree in mechanical or plastics technology engineering or a directly related engineering field, or diploma/certification from an apprenticeship program in mold design and building.  Bachelor’ s degree in engineering is a strong plus.
  8. Direct, hands-on experience in processing injection molds with engineering grade resins is required. 
  9. Strong communications and facilitations skills are required.
  10. Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated experience with successful problem-solving projects is required.
  11. Experience in estimating/quoting tooling programs is a strong plus.
  12. Overnight travel (including some international/overseas travel) is required – estimate 15% to 20% of work time.
  13. Experience in the automotive and/or medical device industries is a plus.

  • Design, build and maintain fixtures, gages and special tooling 
  • Design and build End of Arm Tooling for Production.
  • Troubleshoot  defects on injection molds and determine  associated root cause

Some Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Experience with plastic injection mold maintenance/repair
  • Ability to operate and maintain toolroom equipment (e.g. Mill, Surface Grinder, EDM and Lathe)

  • Proficient knowledge ERP systems (cloud-based systems a plus)
  • Strong understanding of integrated systems
  • Knowledge of SQL code
  • Experience with Business Intelligence applications
  • Experience is identifying use of, and applying lean principles
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Windows, etc.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, business process and multi-tasking skills; with a high attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Ability to travel between US sites frequently (approximately 35 miles) and internationally if needed (0-4 times per year)
  • Ability to speak Spanish and/or French is a plus
