CompanyThe company is a globally-recognized contract manufacturer of injection-molded components and assemblies.  PMC is a privately-held, financially strong organization with more than 88 years of success, currently serving the Medical Device, Automotive and Commercial Electronics markets.  The company offers its customers services from design for manufacturability and project management through injection molding, assembly, packaging and sterilization management.  For its Medical Device customers, the company functions under ISO 13485 certification and FDA and GMP compliance and operates a state-of-the-art, FDA compliant Class 8 (100, 000) clean room. The company currently serves a diverse group of international Medical Device OEMs.  In Automotive, the company is TS 16949 certified and supports a broad range of well-established, international Tier One manufacturers. The company has its main manufacturing facility in a suburb of Indianapolis.


Position Summary:    Provide the interface between the launch teams and tool suppliers for all tool development activities. Develop, design and direct the building of high quality, competitively-costed prototype and production tools.  Deliver First Time Quality (FTQ) with on-time, on-budget launches.  Continue to meet quality standards and cost-effective tool maintenance targets after a tool transitions to

mass production.


Main Responsibilities
  1. Coordinate tool feasibility and tool design meetings using a multi-disciplinary, cross-functional approach to ensure the tool design is optimized for manufacturing efficiency within the company Smart Launch process.
  2. Review and approve designs of all new tools and Engineering Changes before steel is cut (tool design sign-off responsibilities.)
  3. Participate in R&D activities which involve customer interface on new programs under development.
  4. Participate in customer presentations and value-sell the company tooling capabilities and tooling designs. 
  5. Participate in the estimating/quoting process for new tools on an as-needed basis.
  6. Review tool performance (after 3 to 4 months in mass production) incorporating lessons learned into the Mold Standards and future tool builds.  Communicate “ lessons learned” to appropriate tool vendors and company team members.
  7. Develop/maintain a network of highly-competent, competitive tool builders, including global sources for tooling.
  8. Establish and monitor our mold maintenance schedules, ensuring PM plans are appropriate for the complexity of the specific tool.
  9. Participate in continuous improvement activities on current production tools.  Act as a troubleshooting problem-solver on tools with chronic problems.
  10. Continuously improve personal expertise in the latest trends and techniques in tool building and educate the company personnel as appropriate.  Provide mentorship to others in the engineering department with less experience as it relates to tooling engineering activities.
  11. Maintain a safe working environment (Safety Standard Manual) and set an example by following all appropriate safety rules.
  12. Actively participate in and support the implementation and maintenance of the Company' s documented quality system as appropriate.
  13. Actively participate in the creation and protection of the company’ s and customers’ Intellectual Property in all forms including but not limited to trade secrets and patent applications.

Candidate Requirements:  
  1. A positive, “ hands-on”, “ can-do” approach and commitment to the job.
  2. Minimum of ten (10) years of hands-on experience in developing injection mold tooling concepts and designs to meet part requirements and molding process parameters. Similar duration of experience in the management of the construction of highly-robust, high-volume, tightly-tolerance, injection molding tools is required. 
  3. Direct experience in designing and building molds that will see high heat, with hot and cold runner systems, and engineering grade resins is required.
  4. Demonstrated success in directing the final “ tuning” of tools to meet customer specifications in mass production is required.  
  5. Must be able to develop a full bill-of- material for the tool construction and to define the complete process flow for the tool construction build.
  6. Demonstrated expertise in the use of Solidworks and the ability to perform detailed mold flow analysis and modeling, and the capability to translate such modeling into presentation materials and working with customers to achieve DFM goals is strongly preferred.
  7. Minimum education level required – Associate’ s degree in mechanical or plastics technology engineering or a directly related engineering field, or diploma/certification from an apprenticeship program in mold design and building.  Bachelor’ s degree in engineering is a strong plus.
  8. Direct, hands-on experience in processing injection molds with engineering grade resins is required. 
  9. Strong communications and facilitations skills are required.
  10. Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated experience with successful problem-solving projects is required.
  11. Experience in estimating/quoting tooling programs is a strong plus.
  12. Overnight travel (including some international/overseas travel) is required – estimate 15% to 20% of work time.
  13. Experience in the automotive and/or medical device industries is a plus.
Associate’s/BA degree in mechanical or plastics technology engineering or a directly related engineering field, or diploma/certification from an apprenticeship program in mold design and building.  Bachelor’s degree in engineering is a strong plus.
